Farewell Sweet October

Saturday morning Roger, Willie and I hiked Pinnacle Mountain.  It was an absolutely glorious morning.  Our colors are just now beginning to change.  I'm not ready to give up October.

O HUSHED October morning mild,
Thy leaves have ripened to the fall;
To-morrow's wind, if it be wild,
Should waste them all.
The crows above the forest call;

To-morrow they may form and go.
O hushed October morning mild,
Begin the hours of this day slow,
Make the day seem to us less brief.
Hearts not averse to being beguiled,
Beguile us in the way you know;
Release one leaf at break of day;

At noon release another leaf;
One from our trees, one far away;
Retard the sun with gentle mist;
Enchant the land with amethyst.

Slow, slow!
For the grapes' sake, if they were all,
Whose leaves already are burnt with frost,
Whose clustered fruit must else be lost--
For the grapes' sake along the wall.

  2. Hello Bonnie:
    How beautifully your pictures illustrate this perfect poem of Robert Frost. With the countryside looking so wonderful, no wonder you are not willing to say farewell to October. You may be lucky and winter will be a little way off yet. Here it has arrived!

  5. I do love walking in the woods in October. The weather is usually terrific, the colors magnificent, and the fresh air, invigorating. Unfortunately, the snow cut our autumn short, but then the sun came out again and those trees with leaves still on them are still lovely.

    Your pictures show how beautiful this world is.

  7. Arleen, I know it sounds cheesy, but there is so much beauty to be seen. We just need to slow down, open our eyes and count our blessings. I hope you are not being inconvenienced to much by the weather. Bonnie

    Thanks Lana! Bonnie
