Work Before Play

This is my busiest time of the school year.
The "wheels on the bus" are carrying me straight downhill
at breakneck speed.
There is always something for which to prepare,
to begin or to finish.
Work comes home.
The studio gathers a fine layer of
paper clippings and glitter.
Crayons and pencils become dull,
paint pots are emptied,
and erasers disappear into a rubbery dust.

Favorite things must be put aside.
                                                                                                     Sigh!

You know where I am going with this don't you?

An unexpected cold rain shower is alway the perfect excuse
for spending the afternoon with
a good read,

but alas, there is just so much to do.

Having a "to do" list as long as my arm
may temporarily stop me from opening the covers of a book,
yet it hasn't slowed me down in putting together
my summer "to read" or "to consider to read" list.

It certainly hasn't stopped my car from parking in front of a local bookstore
(it is on the way home from....somewhere).
It only takes a few minutes to run in and find a few things
in preparation for my summer.

I'll keep a smile and be patient,
and mind what I tell my children,
"work before play".

My hands are trembling.

Oh, what do you think?
Will I be successful?
I hear them calling my name...

Oh, maybe just a taste.

I'll be playing, I mean working in the garden today.
Are you planning to play this weekend?

Whatever you choose, may you stay safe and find peace.

  1. I will also be working in my garden. I do not like to go out on weekends. To many crowds!!!
I am a stay at home kind of girl.

  2. I know what you mean about a list longer than your arm, I 'm just today trying to get caught up on all the blog posts I've missed because "work comes first"! LOL! I do so love book and love to read, but time is always limited... I still buy books because there is nothing like the feeling and look of a pile of books... but, now, I get my fix with my teeny tiny little iShuffle and I while away my housework, gardening, sewing or any hours while listening to my books... it's fantastic! Love your photos... hope you get caught up with work so you can play soon (I thought I could play this coming week, but plans never seem to work out and I've been booked for work...ugh!) Loved the photos! Cheers~

  5. You can read your books in the evening, after you "play" in the garden. What a treat, garden till dusk, eat a good meal, pour a cuppa and read a good book. I love the little squirrel.. I once raised one, he was such a jolly little fellow!

    1. Jeri, My little guys love to play tricks on me. This little fellow wasn't the least bit afraid of me. I was literally as close as the picture shows.

  6. Mr Squirrel cheered me up . . . even though I would rather the Squirrel Miss, Mr, Mrs stay far, far, away from our neighborhood this spring, summer. They are pesty little buggers . . .

You must find time to read so I will know which of those books I need to put on my "must read" list!

Love the white flower in the lat photo, Bleeding Heart?

Happy busy school days . . . wishing you safe, healthy and happy . . .

  7. We did choose play this weekend. We visited the botanical gardens in Mobile. Insert every pleasant adjective you can think of here. I’m overwhelmed by the plantings they’ve done to come up with any that even come close to describing the gardens and art museum. We brought home more plants, did some shopping and had lunch out. Even though Mobile is a big city I was only aware of my surrounds, not anxious to leave as one might feel after last week. There was a festive mood in Mobile today in support of the runners paying tribute to Boston with at least two marathons events.

Kicking back to reflect on a perfect day. Happy reading, Bonnie.

  9. Everything sounds wonderful , Bonnie. The thrill of planning the end of the school year with all the projects yet to do, the fun in planning and planting new gardens at home, and the rest and excitement you will have in reading a new book, spells PERFECT to me. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy.

  10. I think you'll really like The Sense of an Ending. I really enjoyed it, even though I didn't completely understand what happened! (Fortunately, I got my 18-year-old to read it so we could discuss it.) The book still stays with me and I'd love to read it again.

  11. Play restores and refreshes. I tend to think play should come first.

  12. Bonnie!!!!! teeheheheee...look at that little squirrel! I think he mixes work with play all day! These rascals keep me amused even in the midst of a busy day, in fact, nature makes me STOP long enough for a chuckle.

I take whatever book I am reading at the moment EVERY WHERE I GO so in the event I have to wait somewhere, I can whip it out. But at home, there's the place to relax for sure. Too much snow has halted our gardening plans, but sure enough next month (I HOPE!) we can get things started.

Thank you so much for coming by to visit! Anita

  15. Teachers, as far as I know Bonnie, are among the hardest-working of us all. You guys are on stage all day...you have to be psychologists, diplomats, tacticians. You have to be on the ball non-stop. I'd find it exhausting. No wonder you need a book and a chill sometimes!

    1. Thank you for the kind acknowledgements. There are days when you come home feeling successful. There equal number of days you want to crawl beneath the sheets with a plate of brownies (or a bottle of wine) knowing you could have handled a situation better. No matter I love what I do. Hopefully I have done more good than harm. Thanks again, Bonnie
